Everything You Need to Know About the Clyfford Still Museum

clyfford still museumMost art museums feature a large collection of artwork, representing multiple genres, mediums, and artists. However, for artists whose work was as important as that of Clyfford Still’s, there is a whole museum dedicated to his artwork – the Clyfford Still Museum (CSM) in Denver. The museum is an incredible display of Still’s Abstract Expressionist work, a genre he helped define and advance. If your appreciation of art stretches beyond household names like Picasso, van Gogh, and Warhol, then treat yourself with a visit to the beautiful Clyfford Still Museum.

The Clyfford Still Museum

Clyfford Still lived from 1904-1980, and in his time, became one of the most prominent artists in the Abstract Expressionist movement. According to the Museum of Modern Art, the style is best defined by large paintings that use abstraction to convey the artist’s message. The Museum opened in 2011 and houses the majority of Still’s art. In fact, according to the Museum website, the 3,125 pieces on display comprise 95% of Still’s work, the most thorough collection of any major artist.

According to Museum’s website, the building itself was designed with Still’s background in mind, allowing for plenty of natural light to fill its minimally designed interior. The building features two stories and covers 28,500 square feet.

What You’ll See

The CSM is home to exhibitions, an amazing collection of Still’s art, and materials, photographs, and handwritten notes from his personal life.

Currently on display at the Museum is “Clyfford Still and the San Francisco Scene, 1946-1950.” This exhibition runs from May 20 to Oct. 9, 2016, and features Still’s art from his time in San Francisco and his impact on the city’s art culture.

From Oct. 14, 2016, to Jan. 15, 2017, the “Clyfford Still: The Works on Paper” exhibition will showcase the artist’s graphic art.

The Museum’s collection of Still’s art displays the various stages of work throughout his career, from the 1920s to the 1970s. His paintings from the ‘40s to the ‘70s represent some of his most well-known work.

Although currently accessible to the public, the archives at the CSM contain photographs of Still, some of the tools he used, notes and letters he wrote to fellow artists, and more.
