How to Celebrate Christmas in Denver This December
Make new traditions when you visit our city for the holidays this year. Read over our local insights to discover how to experience Christmas in Denver!
Watch the Parade of Lights
Kick off the holiday spirit during the first weekend in December with the Parade of Lights. This free event takes you on a 2-mile tour through downtown Denver. The festivities begin with ornate floats and marching bands filling the streets of our city with the sounds of Christmas cheer. Once you’ve witnessed these spectacles, end the evening with the lighting of the Denver City and County buildings. Bring your camera to capture this vibrant sight!
Christmas at the Denver Zoo
One of our favorite Christmas activities for kids in Denver, watch in wonder at the Lights at the Denver Zoo just a block away from Castle Marne. This extravaganza spans 70 acres and shines throughout the campus at night. You’ll hear live entertainment, animal encounters, meetings with Santa, and an array of lighted animal sculptures. Since it’s one of the most popular Christmas in Denver events, we suggest purchasing your tickets in advance!
Blossoms of Light
From the end of November to the middle of December, attend the Blossoms of Light at Denver Botanic Gardens. This extraordinary festival of lights illuminates the natural beauty of this stunning haven. You can enjoy the twinkling bulbs throughout the evening as well as warm up with one of the warm drinks and delightful treats. You’ll also receive a souvenir mug with your purchase of a beverage. You’re sure to have a great time at this year’s festivities!
Watch the Nutcracker
From the end of November until Christmas Eve, the Colorado Ballet presents The Nutcracker, a beloved holiday classic, at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. This live masterpiece has celebrated over 55 years and still executes the same iconic choreography to the harmonic tunes of Tchaikovsky’s extraordinary arrangement. It’s another Denver favorite and has been named the most wonderful production of this play in the U.S. in the 10th Annual Goldstar National Nutcracker Award contest. We hope you enjoy this performance as much as we do!
Hear the Colorado Symphony
Enjoy the sounds of Handel’s Messiah presented by the Colorado Symphony. This revered oratorio is a soulful classic that is loved by both locals and visitors alike. Before you go, we suggest buying your tickets in advance because it’s one of the most fantastic performances during the season!
The Georgetown Christmas Market
This delightful festival is held on the first and second weekends of December in nearby Georgetown. As you stroll through this European-style marketplace, welcome the holidays into your hearts. You’ll be captivated by the strings of lights adorning the unique boutiques, exceptional restaurants, and museums. In addition, enjoy the leisurely pace of a canoeing journey or a horse-drawn carriage ride in the historic square.
